Wikipedia defines wicked problems as: difficult or impossible to solve because of incomplete, contradictory, and changing requirements that are often difficult to recognize. The use of term “wicked” here has come to denote resistance to resolution, rather than evil. Moreover, because of complex interdependencies, the effort to solve one aspect of a wicked problem may reveal or create other problems.

Origins of mindSHIFT™

mindSHIFT was born out of frustration. The disfunction of the construction industry seemed to consistently thwart the natural desire to create trust and partner for better project outcomes. Every participant was fully aware and resigned to a wasteful process full of conflict that erodes profits and ends in disputes. The industry trade groups were also painfully aware with each special interest attempting to “solve” the problem from their vantage point. This generated a lot of heat and blame but not much light.

In March of 2007 eighteen organizations sent their top leaders to Houston for a different kind of conversation. Gensler hosted the event. Rex Miller designed a unique approach by inviting a diverse set of stakeholders, many of whom had a natural distrust for one another.

What Does the Problem Look Like from Your Seat On the Bus?

Using a graphic scribe the group heard one leader after another describe their frustrations, often pointed at another stakeholder in the room. Through the contention and the persistence a pattern emerged on the wall that point to a new insight. Everyone was experiencing essentially the same frustrations for the same reasons, it was their vantage point that blinded them to the general truth of the system.

When one leader shared his revelation that with all of the talent and history of success in the room there was still something about the system that foiled our best efforts to work collaboratively and prevent a project from derailing once it hit a bump.

When all of the factors were illustrated on the lifesize wall in front of everyone it was clear. The system is designed to create distrust.

What does a trust based system look like and is anyone doing it?

That quest drove our journey, summits and research. We identify positive outliers who were defying conventional wisdom, breaking the rules but getting far superior results. When we connected the dots, created pilots to test the concepts and synthesized our work we wrote about it and published the work with Wiley & Sons.


Rex published the book The Commercial Real Estate Revolution: Nine Transforming Keys to Lowering Costs, Cutting Waste, and Driving Change in a Broken Industry. The book and the work of the first mindSHIFT won the 2009 CoreNet Global Innovator of the year award. It has also become a foundational book for companies tackling billion dollar projects.

The Second mindSHIFT™ – Case4Space

Three years after The Commercial Real Estate Revolution another wicked problem grew to become intolerable to many. 70% of employees go to work everyday disengaged. 20% are toxic and it’s better to pay them to stay home. Worse, these statistics have not moved in more than ten years.

A group of 35 leaders came together to ask what lays at the root of this problem and could he use the same mindSHIFT process to move the needle. During our first meeting we experienced a similar “aha” about the system that drives workplace engagement. Our conclusion is that companies are designed to create disengagement. Detached leaders created disengagement. Silo’d organizations add so much friction to getting work accomplished that it leads to disengagement. Mismanaged change and the confusion of complexity leads to disengagement.

The group called itself Case4Space and invested eighteen months designing their own summits and looking for positive outliers, some of the most engaging companies on the planet.

The research was synthesized into a book that came out in the fall of 2014 called Change Your Space, Change Your Culture – How Engaging Workplaces Lead to Transformation and Growth.

As of the fall of 2015 the book has outperformed the publishers estimate by 300%. The mindSHIFT process and the book have been awarded CoreNet’s Industry Excellence award. Recognition from sales of the book and the CoreNet award have elevated the careers and improved the business for those who fully participated.

The Third mindSHIFT™ – K12 mindSHIFT

K12 education has become the consistent butt of criticism and jokes. A group of education leaders who read Change You Space… approached Rex and asked if he would help them move the needle in our nation’s education system.

The current effort now has more than 45 organizations and over 85 educators, stakeholders and subject matter experts.

In our first meeting we experienced that same awakening to the fundamental nature of the education system. We concluded that schools, in general, are designed to create fear and insecurity. High stakes testing, competition, funding, political drama, the media all work to create stress and anxiety among the kids, the teachers, the administration and the parents.

Our quest has been to find schools in the most challenging circumstances that are able to defy the odds and create a safe and engaged learning culture, with high achievement with ordinary people.

Our work will come to a conclusion in 2016.
